A characteristic in Peter Maly's work is his affinity for basic geometric shapes. He is a protagonist of simplicity, his designs define themselves by their considerable clarity, functionality and durability. “My work is shaped by the search for expressive forms that, although being as independent as possible, don't shove their way to the fore (I live in Hamburg and understatement has always been a virtue of the Hansa, something I also appreciate in design). I also strive to turn my designs into durable products. They are conceived to be the antithesis to an ever increasingly rapid rise in consumerism. There's also an ecological argument here, as things that we appreciate having around us don't land in the rubbish, instead being passed on from generation to generation. My recipe against rapid “optical wear-and-tear“ is the use of shapes that are clear and geometric in nature. They have a logical basis and a clear formal language. I use them in my functional products, often producing them with quality materials that contrast with one another.“
